Professional Head Shots vs Selfies: How do you brand yourself?

More and more people are doing research online before they make a decision to do business.  When it comes to your social media profile, does your personal picture reflect your professionalism? Would people take you seriously if they looked at your profile before they picked up the phone to call you? First impressions are extremely important in business. The picture you post on your profile can ultimately lead you to making money or losing money.

Go here to view examples of professional head shots.

There are many advantages to having a professional photographer take your profile picture: proper lighting, posing, highlighting, photoshop, etc. However, the most important reason is because it communicates to your clients and prospects, “I’m a professional”.

If you schedule your professional headshot with Higher Focus Photography before Labor Day, you can save $24. Call us to book now: 636-273-6600 or contact us online by clicking here and selecting Contact Us.

What will you wear?

What is your style?  Have you ever really thought about it?  Think about the clothes you wear.  Is there anything special about how you dress or do you just think, “I’m average”?  Your clothes say a lot about you.  Here are 3 tips from our “What to Wear Guide” to help you always look your best and have a killer photography session:

Make sure your clothes fit appropriately.  If your clothes are too tight or too baggy, it looks awkward and can be a distraction.  Tight fitting clothes can show bulges.  Loose fitting clothes can actually make you look heavier.  Wearing the right kind of clothes can make you look fabulous!

Join the Dark Side!  The fall is fast approaching and it’s the perfect time to start wearing darker colors.  Dark clothing is concealing and will make you look thinner.  Avoid wearing clothes with slogans, logos, or other distractions.  Bold stripes and large patterns can stand out and be distracting.  Instead, make it all about you!  Wear colors that go best with your complexion, hair color, and your eyes.  Wearing the right color top can make your eyes “pop” – especially on camera.

Be unique.  Your clothing selections determine your personal style.  Don’t expect to be unique if you are wearing what everyone else is wearing.  Your clothing should be an extension of who YOU are.  Wearing “popular brand” t-shirts just makes you like everyone else and it’s hard to stand out when you are just one of the crowd.  Make sure your personality shines through!

Bonus tip:  Don’t be afraid to cover up.  If there is something about your body you don’t like, cover it up!  I am amazed at how many people will wear something sleeveless and talk about how they hate their upper arms.  If you are uncomfortable with the way you look, it will show on the camera.

Before the day of your photo shoot, try on your clothing selections in front of a mirror.  Make sure you’re happy with how they look and fit.  There is nothing worse than showing up to your photography session and discovering the awesome outfit you chose doesn’t fit, is wrinkled, or has a big stain!  A little planning goes a long way!

Photography Made Easy…

Avoid this mistake!

You’re there with your camera…

The moment has arrived.  You knew it was going to happen.  You’ve been expecting this.  You’re ready.  It’s happening!!! You raise your fancy camera, snap the image, and… What happened?  Something went wrong!!!!  The image looks horrible and the moment is lost!  You’re thinking, “Why is it blurry?  Was it a setting?  Why is it so dark?  Maybe I used the wrong lens…”

We’ve all been there.  The good news is there are simple ways to avoid common mistakes with DSLR cameras and we’ll show you!  Higher Focus Photography is hosting our next series of “Photography made easy” classes on March 4th and March 11th at 7pm.  We will be covering how to choose the right lens for capturing that special moment; how to take a crisp image; how to draw a persons eye to your subject; using light to create dramatic images; shooting like a photo journalist; and much more.  You’ll have the opportunity to practice what you’ve learned and show off your new skills at our studio!  Bring your manual and we’ll go through it and explain the important parts that seem difficult to understand.

The series is $100.  You will receive a $100 gift certificate that you can use toward a portrait session, purchasing products, or can be given as a gift to someone you love.  Call 314-623-1587 to reserve your seat.  Don’t wait!  There are only 10 spots available.

Memories Found

Christina Tenti is an activist, a writer, and an empathic entrepreneur.  I had the pleasure of meeting her at a networking event where I recorded video of her giving an amazing presentation about elephants.  When it was over, I had this nagging question, “what is an empathic entrepreneur?”  So, I invited her for coffee.  We spent hours talking about her business, her passions, and her love of elephants.  Christina was gracious enough to share this story:

There was a lump in my throat as I sorted through treasured photos, searching for an important picture of my grandmother’s ring that was stolen and I wanted to have re-created. In my search, I was brought back in time to life in the past by these treasured mementos. I believe that there is no other piece of our history than a photograph to bring to life the people, the times, and emotions of our days, sometimes so long ago. Our memories are there in photos, seemingly in real life. Time can stand still as we peer into boxes or sit with albums that contain pieces of the past. We are captivated and we remember or are reminded of almost every detail surrounding the times we honor, the people we miss, the motivation that spurs us on to create new memories in the present.

As I reached inside those boxes and traveled back in time, I wondered if other people felt the same joy as I was feeling. So, I asked friends on social media to identify the most important item in their home. Every response was the same:  their photos. That’s why we continue the momentum to document life, accomplishments, changes as they occur in pictures. There’s no better way to communicate and share milestones in our lives with family and friends. The photos we treasure adorn the walls in our homes, offices, and the homes of family and friends people we love.  Photographs are the one investment that offers a lifetime of tribute to our journey, spurring on the desire to create new, continue to grow, honor those we love, the moments we want to capture forever. So, stop what you’re doing. Travel back in time. Grab the opportunity to capture the present as only photographs can. I found my lost photo and am creating a new ring to honor my grandmother. Don’t hesitate to preserve your own memories in photographs that you’ll treasure forever.

Thank you Christina!  I love this story!

Wings of Hope

We recently had an afternoon photo session with one of our models at Wings of Hope in Chesterfield, MO. Wings of Hope is an emergency medical air transport facility that flies all over the world bringing medical aid to children and families. We were blessed and honored to be allowed to video and photograph many of these planes with our model, Andrew. Mixing video and still images with music is great way to catch people’s attention , create awareness, and entertain. Enjoy!
